Walter Brennan, movie and TV star, was greeted at the airport by the 59ers and Fair Farmerettes on July 25 1963 while on his way to Chief Joseph Days. The motorcade took him to his birthday party at the Marcus Whitman Hotel. File photos courtesy of the Union-Bulletin.
Brennan bought a ranch and home near Joseph, Oregon in 1940. He was a regular in the Chief Joseph Days parades, and was the Parade Marshal in 1969. |

Victory Center at 1st and Main was the site of War Bond rallies. Dignitaries at this event in September 1942 were Hollywood stars Joan Leslie, Walter Pidgeon, and Adolph Menjou. Chuck Connors, star of the 1950sTV show "The Rifleman", visited Walla Walla on April 2 1960 to speak at a luncheon at the Marcus Whitman Hotel, ride in the parade aboard the Walla Walla 59ers stagecoach, give a demonstration of his rifle handling skills, and appear on stage at the Auto Show in the new Fairgrounds Expo building.
